According to Apple’s recent figure, App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch has topped 3 billion downloads less than 18 months. This means that the number of downloads has roughly doubled since mid-July when Apple reported more 1.5 billion downloads. At the time, the App Store had more than 65,000 applications available and more than 10,000 content creators in the iPhone Developer program.

In a statement by Steve Jobs, Apple chief executive, he said the App Store “offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon,”
Indeed, Apple rivals, including include Research in Motion’s BlackBerry Apps World, Google’s Android Market, Microsoft’s Mobile Marketplace for Windows, and Palm’s Apps Catalog, remain far behind the market leader, which boasts iPhone and iPod Touch customers in 77 countries and an App Store covering 20 categories, including games, business, news, sports, health, reference and travel.
However, Apple’s success has also receive criticism, complain from developers about the approval process. Philip Schiller, the company’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing, has defended Apple, saying the company is merely acting like any other retailer that wants to ensure quality products.
